Yet Pakatan was always, in its strategic concept, a necessarily a faltering vehicle. An idea that, in the face of undeniably enormous difficulties, was always more appealing than it was coherent.
Clive Kessler, Malay Mail Online
Without becoming too tedious, it will be possible, I hope, to remind everybody of what I have been saying for years, and with some considerable — if at times unwelcome — emphasis since the years of the agonisingly long “lead-up”, or “phoney war”, preceding  GE13.
Namely, that the idea of a “popular front”, of an all anti-BN forces opposition bloc, may seem very nice (and, let us give credit where credit is due, only the consummately agile and mercurial Anwar could ever have produced such a pact, could have negotiated such a thing into being).
Created it? Yes. But, by its nature, his is a creation that is hard to sustain.
Hard to sustain because it lacks coherence, plausibility, deep grounding.
It may work — as, necessarily, it was been designed to work under Malaysia’s dubious “first past the post” electoral system — to mean and help ensure, so long as it might last, that opposition parties will not compete against one another, will not split the opposition vote by offering rival candidates on election day.
But a “no competing at the polls on polling day” agreement is not a political coalition, still less a common political direction, agenda and identity — a solid opposition “front”.
Pakatan is and has always been little more than a “no enemies on polling day” tactical pact, a “pragmatic” measure.
Pakatan is and remains an improbable and inchoate combination (or “loose assemblage”), not an amalgam, of mutually contradictory and incompatible elements.
That kind of vehicle can get you “only so far” on a common political journey; it may initially offer the prospect of some pleasing progress, of exciting forward momentum.
But when it encounters its limits as it must eventually do (and now has), its motley passengers can then find themselves stranded in “mid-journey”.
It has been clear for years that Umno/BN’s main survival and domination-restoration strategy has been to place unbearable pressure on the opposition as a coalition, and especially upon PAS.
It has mounted a targeted effort to play upon, to play up and amplify, three crucial inherent “fault lines”, three areas of serious, even major, vulnerability for PAS.
First, within Pakatan, between the component parties and their respective leaderships, especially between PAS and the other two partner parties.
Second, within PAS, between the old, or “hard-line” ulama leadership and tendencies and the so-called new “moderate”, professional elements.
And third, within “Malay society” and “the peninsular Malay sociopolitical imagination” more broadly — so long as PAS does not revert to supporting Umno on Islamic-Malay grounds — to build upon, and further build up, mistrust between the mass of rural Malay voters and the PAS leadership, and thereby upon PAS as a party generally.
It is those PAS voters, and the party’s grip upon their devoted allegiance, that have always been the key to Malaysian electoral politics.
Those rural supporters have long been PAS’ reliable “vote-bank”. They have provided PAS with a powerful source of political strength and legitimacy that PAS could amply “harvest” at Umno’s expense.
PAS’ ability, in that way, to deny Umno the mass Malay support that it yearned for, and the ensuing political credibility that it demanded, came at Umno’s great political cost.
That ability, its capacity to deny Umno incontrovertible and ultimate Malay credibility, has been the basis of PAS’ political continuity and endurance.
That was the main challenge that Umno faced, long before Pakatan Rakyat was ever dreamed of — going back at least to 1959 — and it still continued to pose that central challenge to Umno after the Pakatan compact, with PAS as one of its members, was fashioned.
In the Pakatan coalition PKR was to be “neutralised” by the continuing, unrelenting personal, political and legal pressure on Anwar.
The DAP and its leaders were to be marginalised, stigmatised and “scandalised” as implacable enemies of the supposed “immanent destiny” of “Ketuanan Melayu”, the idea of Malaysia (regardless of what the Merdeka Constitution might hold) as a land primarily of and for Malays.
But the crucial “squeeze play” in the Umno “play-book” was always that which was directed, in those three different forms or “prongs”, against PAS.
Umno’s anti-PAS operation has been a masterful exercise in “wedge politics”.
We are now seeing that overall strategy come to fruition, and for two main reasons.
First, because of the enormous pressure that Umno has been able to place upon the Pakatan coalition, especially upon PAS; and second, because of the inherent weakness, frailty and fragility of the Pakatan compact itself, especially so far as PAS’s continued participation and consent is concerned.
That was a weakness that has been amplified by the undue, at times uncritical and even delusional, hope that Pakatan leaders and followers often have placed upon their all too “pragmatic” and limited arrangements for political, mainly electoral, co-operation.
Yet Pakatan was always, in its strategic concept, a necessarily a faltering vehicle. An idea that, in the face of undeniably enormous difficulties, was always more appealing than it was coherent.
It was a frail and fragile and all too “pragmatic” an alliance because it had to be that way.
It was weak because it lacked real substance and content. And it lacked that plausible content because keeping PAS “on-side”, and inside the coalition’s accommodating tent, required that such questions, awkward and potentially divisive questions of political substance and content, be avoided. Or dubiously “finessed”. The hudud issue, for example.
So, as events have unfolded lately, the long predictable has now become likely, even imminent.
One may, if one so chooses, find this situation, and being in it, unpalatable and unpleasant.
But one cannot reasonably find it surprising.
It has been “on the cards” all along.
Even if a way is found to manage this current impasse over the position of Selangor Mentri Besar, to patch up some technically artful but all too fanciful compromise, the underlying problem will remain.
Can Pakatan ever recover?
You have to be a counterfactual optimist, and one with a very poor sense of the realities of politics, to imagine so.

Selamat Hari Raya Eid Mubarak 2014

Once again Selamat Hari Raya Eid Mubarak to all our Muslim friends and fellow Malaysians!

May we follow through this Holy month of Ramadan with greater mutual respect, tolerance and heartfelt forgiveness, love!

Let's be more united, celebrate our immensely rich diversity and talents to create a better future for all Malaysians.

Let's free ourselves from destructive negative thoughts. Let's squash our meaningless  racist prejudice and supremacist mindsets.
Let's refrain and steer away from contemplating or uttering insensitive hurtful ethnic or religious irritations...

Let's move toward greater tolerance, understanding and mutual respect with one another!

Together we can forge a better tomorrow, a more progressive, more livable Malaysia!

Salam Aidilfitri!

Sunday Thots: Dr M's Blog blocked by facebook

Facebook-bars-dr-m-blog

Dr M is sadly and totally confused and obsessed with the ingrained view that all Jews are the anathema to Muslims.

His purely antisemitic construct has made him lose sight of wider view history, believing that any Jewish contribution esp to human rights, socialism, etc. is therefore, by virtue of origin, flawed but pervasive in a global Jewish conspiracy!

Therefore, in his thinking, this makes all concepts of rising individual and universal rights disdainful, and inferior to his selfmade autocratic worldview that is cloaked in selected Islamic tenets and third world championing populism.

His clever and selective use of 'pick and choose' international law to vindicate his one-sided views as to who violates these, lead him to condemn only those in his narrow focus to be wrong.

If only his world views are more inclusive and less blatantly biased and antisemitic, his 'philosophy' might be better accepted!

Eg. Has Dr M or any Muslim leader condemned the internecine slaughter of thousands of innocents among Muslims eg. Sunnis vs Shias a la ISIS-ISIL, Boko Haram, Syrian civil war etc.?

Indeed some of Dr M's strident remarks about the Zionist-Israeli military excesses are spot on and their indiscriminate retaliatory acts are tantamount to genocidal actions that should be universally condemned! But consistency of rational concepts and beliefs must be more balanced not skewed....

But sadly taken together with his warped antisemitic/anti-Jewish diatribes and his unshakable undertones of race-centred obsession of being a beleaguered Malay in today's world, his utterings are dismissed as the outpourings of a crackpot past his prime!

His unapologetic racism has also made his posturings more and more extremist and sounding like an ultra bigot, now cast in the hardening plaster of age, not a statesman that he aspires to be remembered!

I fear for our nation...

I fear for our nation...
I fear for our Malaysia!
I despair for our future!

When emotionally-charged
but irrational extremists
under whichever guise
of self-declared religiosity,
of exclusive ethnic might,
assert their self-proclaimed 'right',
when they threaten, intimidate,
different thinking others,
oppositionist representatives;
bully, ignore and abuse
even cowardly leaders,
openly dare duly-elected
MPs and SAs;
when they blatantly challenge
order and flout the law,
call for extreme violence
even to behead opposing persons
with differing views,
I fear for civil society.
I fear for our nation!

To openly call for fear-instilling
supremacist-led mayhem and violence,
against another different,
To 'defend' exclusive ethnic rights
against all imagined others,
of dastardly fancied DNA-poisoning,
of porcine paranoia,
of ethnic purity,
of religious 'cleansing'!
Isn't this wanton rabble-rousing
fascist neo-Nazi call to violence?
Genocidal intent?
Isn't this extremely dangerous?
Heinous? Seditious?
Are these harbingers
of approaching pogroms, purges?
Our own Kristallnacht?
Our night of the long knives?
Crimes foretold against humanity?

In civilised society
can we allow, nay tolerate
such fascist bigotry run amuck?
like the murderous wilding ISIS?
Sunnis vs Shiites vs others?
Malays, Muslims vs others?
Us vs them?

But alas our emasculated
tongue-tied leadership
has chosen to abdicate
its responsibility,
its duty...
Our democracy...
is dying, in death throes...
majoritarian power is meant
to rule, to make policies for all,
to protect minorities,
not to overwhelm,
marginalise, demonise!
Our gormless leaders...
they're complicit by default,
they've tacitly permitted
hate-filled, loud-mouthed
soulless extremists
to cripple our civil society!

Despair, sad indeed...
our leaders, so warped,
So lost, so directionless,
So paralysed
So trapped, within
their cynical muck
of political chicanery,
expediency and cowardice...
we're now treading
perilously close
to social, societal collapse,
anarchy beckons...

Our already fragile sense
of communal belonging
as a once proud nation,
bludgeoned to death,
trampled underfoot,
while our leaders
our 'Neros' watch
by the sidelines,
fiddling soundlessly
as our Malaysian Rome burns!

Our unity's now so sundered...

It'll be a miracle
to turn around
any time soon,
or ever!
Our once celebrated
disparate multiethnic diversity
all but a beached whale
of tired acronyms:
1This or 1That!
1
I fear for our nation.
1Vacant shibboleths!
gasping its last breaths...
The terminal stench of decay
reeks, pervades,
befouls our nation's
once pristine ambiance...
One Asia, truly!
of infectious courtesy
joyful nationhood,
civil discourse,
mutual respect,
common purpose
national pride...
all but dissipated... lost, gone? forever?

Reconciliation...
Now seems impossibly distant
as supremacist right-wingers
hunker down
with even more arrogant
supercilious 'jaguh kampung'
rude crude posturings,
with seeming impunity,
with state-sanctioned approval,
with supposed judicial complicity!

Goodbye one Malaysia!

Alas, we're slipping,
tumbling down
the crumbling slopes
of BTN'd fueled,
ketuanan-indoctrinated,
racist-infested foundations,
into abysmal depths
of despair
of lawlessness
of anarchy
of failed states...?
Like Zimbabwe, Syria,
Egypt or Iraq!

May God or All** save Malaysia!

FARE THEE WELL FEARSOME TIGER!

FARE THEE WELL FEARSOME TIGER!

Fare thee well my good man!
The people's hero has departed!
An unsung icon reclaims
his just adulation,
spontaneous and heartfelt
Tens of thousands
We mourn, we throng,
we send you off...
We all cry, weep,
a little death saps,
hollows our soul
within us all...

Inside us....
Disbelief,
Sorrow,
Anguish,
Despair...
Then...
Hope,
of thousands
Tigers everyone!
Young, and old,
Malaysians all
Reigniting life's social purpose

Away fearful furies!
Courage cometh,
enstout our hearts
Energize our youths,
our gen X, gen Y
Of boys and men,
of girls and women,
A new generation entrusted
Oh recharged, united Malaysians
Rebuild our stalled Nation
Retrofit our collective
disparate strengths,
Dispel our homegrown schisms--
Squash our bigot-engendered mischief
Banish those ugly parochial extremisms
Stop the derailing train of bullies,
of cynical exclusive radicalism
Of political mindlessness
Of forgotten promises!
Retreat,  reflect, reform...
Let's grow together
to greater glories!

Sparked now ever so poignantly
So belatedly,
So consciously
By our Tiger of Jelutong,
Our Braveheart
So long, so accustomed,
So sure, so legally robust,
so authoritative
So dependable
Seemingly so timeless,
fearless,  fearsome!
Alas, untimely grim-reaped
Now lost to us all...

Whither the future?
Whither stronger men,
Women of substance?
Irreplaceable legacy...
Scores of wannabees
To fill such oversized shoes...
But hope lies eternal
Aspirants pledge renewed spirits
Thousands rise to be counted
Perhaps, never to be as great
But still, hearts and souls
are astirred now
Challenges to face anew
Promises of tomorrow beckons
Inspired now,
Oh towering icon
We'll take on
where you'd left off...

Rest now,
gentle giant of a man,
farewell good soul!
Fare thee well fearsome Tiger!

MH 370.... 8 March 2014

MH 370.... 8 March 2014

Why're we so different...?
     so in the dark,
                        still!
True, plane missing
    Still un-found....

0041-------0240?
           0130!? Which?
Yet....
239 souls
227 plus 12 crew....

For loved ones
   So much anguish
     So much pain
       So much in not knowing
     So exasperating
   So hopeless
So little news
   So few updates
     So lacking in
     in-depth discussion
     Opinions, experts....

Ah,
that irrepressible
     control freak nature
     in our 'we know best'
        'leaders'...
only 'we' who 'know',
     can call the shots!
       (or tweak the facts
       or hide distort the truth?!)

"Patience!"
"Don't speculate!"
"Rumours"
Lies?
Conspiracies, conspiracies, conspiracies....

Control control control! ......................
inelegant
deafening
silence!

Ode to DSAI...7 March 2014

Ode to DSAI...7 March 2014

Our hearts sank,
      sinking still...
Our soul stumbles,
      tumbles,
         falls,
but not just a few
      notches

to depths
      of gnawing sadness
of implacable melancholy
that knows no sensible bounds
that rubbishes
all sense of right vs wrong
that squirms at the unholy haste
      of unmasked shadows
      of unleashed orcian beasts
      of sinister wayang kulit puppetry,
by political masters
      nee malign thugs,
         run amuck
of judicial inexplicability
      flexing gormless unseen hands
      behind veneers of 'blind' chutzpah
of vengeful retribution,
of he who must be destroyed,
of he who must be demonised
of he who would be 'king'

Justice be damned!
Rule by law!
     (of 'chosen' few!)
Might tramples right!
     Power trumps the powerless...

Oh gloaming Malaysian twilight,
     darkening oppressive haze!
Our people cries in anguish:
Questions:
Whither the touted fabric
        of our social norms?
     Torn asunder...
Whither our civil decency?
     Run afoul...

Our vital spirits
     flickering flames a-doused
Our kindred souls --
     carved out raw, hollowed out!
Our hopes --
     dashed, unquenched,
        all but extinguished,
eclipsing into that long
     long dark night...

Our civil rights a-trampled...
     Our institutions a-crumbling
Our nation's mission -- fading,
     Directionless, rudderless,
         vision awry
Wawasan 2020 grinds aground...

Democracy's dying,
     Seemingly, irrevocably...
Evil, despair, zealots triumph
     Erstwhile bigots flourish
Civil society retreats,
     dumbed down, flabbergasted,
     'bought' with BRIM silvers
     browbeatened,
     teeth-gritted anger
     impotent, yet stout-hearted
         determined, recharging!?
Rise oh Rise, uncowed friends!
     Doth death beckon?
Nay, rebirth and renaissance beckons!

DSAI, be not alone,
your travails are not in vain,
armies of kindred souls
     stand with you,
     pray with you,
     fight with you...
We pledge unwavering allegiance
To overcome this travesty of injustice,
     Forwards,
         towards a new era

For a Better Malaysia!
